On Person of Interest Fanfic

Once I had determined that Person of Interest shows a very interesting relationship, and had watched all the eps there were to watch, I went looking for fanfic. This is my normal modus operandi.

About slash fanfic, or the comparative scarcity thereof.

For some reason, I'd formed an impression of the POI fandom as fairly large and active. I don't know what exactly gave me this impression, because I hadn't had any contact with the fandom at all. Perhaps it was that several people on my friendslist regularly post about POI.

Anyway: I was surprised to find that the number of Reese/Finch slash stories fell far short of my expectations. Particularly longer stories seem to be in very short supply (if you'll pardon the pun).

I have yet to form a good theory on the reason(s) for this dismaying POI Slash Drought. Is the fandom simply less popular than I assumed? Are writers deterred because one of the protagonists is not classically handsome? Or is it something else entirely…?

About "undercover as a gay couple" fics.

Specifically: How come this fandom isn't full of "undercover as a gay couple" fics?

Since I first wrote this, one such story was actually posted. This is most definitely a step in the right direction! Carry on, please! :-) However, given how perfectly suited the fandom is for this particular cliché, I had expected a veritable flood of stories.

For example, canon practically cries out for a Reese/Finch story where their pursuit of a number takes them into a gay resort or gated community, or on a gay cruise, or some such. Most people automatically assume that the obviously filthy rich Finch is Reese's sugar daddy. Some are envious and/or incredulous – how did Finch manage to secure such a fine specimen of arm candy?! Others are contemptuous of one or both of them (because Reese would sell himself like that, and because Finch would buy someone and consider it something to be proud of).

Someone hits on Reese, and Finch doesn't react much at all, projecting cool confidence and the absolute conviction that Reese has no interest whatsoever in anyone else. And someone hits on Finch, and hey presto, the millionaire's indolent boytoy is suddenly all looming dead-eyed whispery menace, scaring the crap out of the hapless would-be interloper.

And one very smart person really gets it, and sees that Reese is not a boytoy at all, and Finch is not a sugar daddy. This person at some point confides in Reese that they're a little envious of Reese – for having found someone he's obviously so crazy about, and who is so crazy about him, and who complements him so perfectly.

Don't you think fandom needs a story like that? Not that I've thought about it or anything.

About all those other missing fics.

Undercover in a gay bar. (Totally distinct from "undercover as a gay couple"! No, really. Ahem.) Amnesia. Bodyswap. Fuck or die. Soulbonds. Telepathy. Everyone thinks they're doing it. One of them's a hooker. One of them is undercover as a hooker in a gay bar while having amnesia and stuck in the wrong body (get your mind out of the gutter, you know what I meant).

Needless to say, there need to be way more of the non-cliché kind of slash stories in this fandom, too. There need to be more POI slash stories of every kind, period.

Where are all the stories? Where??

I have found some truly excellent POI slash stories, mind you. Their number is just depressingly small.

I had this whole giant endless thread with spatz once about all the awesome ways you could do amnesia in this fandom. It ended up with both of us writing amnesia fic.

I REALLY want fuck or die, too, though. And hooker fic. Oh, and bodyswap would be really interesting in this fandom, too. They'd both do so badly in each other's bodies. Reese would have to deal with Finch's chronic horrible pain issue and his comparable fragility, and Finch wouldn't do very well at suddenly having to be the one in charge of physically defending them, either.

Bodyswap would be wonderful. They'd do horribly in some ways, but I think that ultimately both of them would learn a lot from the experience, too. In their case, I think it wouldn't be so much about understanding each other - they already understand each other very well. But I can definitely see them learning more about the roles they each occupy, how the way people around them react to them and their respective roles, and how much of an effect all of that has on who they actually are. That would be absolutely fascinating. (I hope I didn't phrase this too confusingly. It was very clear in my mind. *g*)

Yay for amnesia!fic - such a wonderful guilty pleasure. Though really, I don't actually have any guilt about it at all!

You think there is a scarcity of slash in this fandom? Try looking for POI gen and you'll know true despair.

Yikes, I can only imagine. I feel your pain! There really needs to be more fanfic in this fandom, period.

So you don't like Finch/Reese, then?

The pairing doesn't do anything for me. :(

I have no interest in seeing them in a sexual relationship. Give me casefiles, crossovers (Come on! How many canons are there with a New York setting where characters might end up in mortal danger?), angst, h/c, friendship, trust issues, timetravel AUs historical AUs, conspiracies - but as soon as anyone starts taking off their clothes I'm out of there.

as soon as anyone starts taking off their clothes I'm out of there.

Fair enough! *g* I've run into a lot of pairings like that too; pairings that I just didn't want to see while the rest of fandom was all over them...

So frustrating.

I'm just glad that I actually like the dominant pairing in this fandom. Though there's one definite trend I've noticed in the stories I've read so far: The sex is amazingly unexplicit. I think in everything I've read so far, there was one single foreplay scene that was a little fleshed out; the action cut away before the main event. And all of the other sex scenes were passed over very briefly.

I'm still waiting for the recent upswing in POI interest to translate into more good stories.
There's no lack of terrible ones. *shudder* And there have been some recent excellent ones, but WRITE FASTER, WRITERS. Ahem.

Oooh, there's been a recent upswing? That's excellent! Then all the fanfic is sure to follow. Especially those really long, wonderful slash epics every fandom needs! Surely it must be so.

They are probably all busy on their huge epics, and will soon be finished!!!

Late to your party, but... while I've found the amount of Reese/Finch fic is growing, I also lament the lack of really good long fics over the trend of short pieces that have seemed to proliferate in recent years in many fandoms. Write it quick and get it out there is fine, but I crave more depth. (That said, my own fics in this fandom haven't been nearly as long as most of the ones I've written in my other fandoms over the years. But at least it's gotten me writing again, lol.)

However, I think one big reason for the lack of tons and tons of slash is that for some reason POI has a huge, huge number of fans who are very new to fandom as a whole and who think the show is all about how Reese is going to fall in love with Carter. They not only are just het shippers, they come from the non-fannish, heteronormative world that can't conceive of the fine points of even a male bonding relationship and seem to think Finch is at worst an afterthought in the series and that Carter is the one true love for whom Reese has been searching ever since Jessica died. Go figure. Most of the het fics are posted on ff.net -- where I generally don't go -- and at least AO3 has most of the slash, but having spent time on a forum that is at least 95% Careese oriented to the point that most of the Reese/Finch fans don't post much at all and only the het fans seem to get any credit for the "fandom being so wonderful and friendly" etc... sigh. That could explain the dearth of slash. I have tried there but have gotten a bit of a headache from beating my head against that particular wall. Sorry to have gone off on that tangent here. But TL/DR: it's the het shippers fault.

I've enjoyed your comments about the show as I search far and wide in an effort to find more slashers discussing POI and I hope you are still enjoying the show!
